In 1860, Houston's principled opposition to Texas’ succession from the United States led to his removal as Governor. His forecast as to the ultimate outcome and dire consequences of that action proved to be to be uncannily accurate. In a speech following his removal as Texas Governor, Houston observed,
“I declare that civil war is inevitable and is near at hand... For this reason I predict the civil war which is now at hand will be stubborn and of long duration.” (reference)
- He served with gallantry in the War of 1812.
- He was Commanding General of the Texas Revolutionary Army which defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, arguably one of the most important military clashes in world history.
- He was elected President of the Republic of Texas.
