Introduction

Sam Houston is an icon in Texas and United States history. His lifelong journey began on March 2, 1793, in the Shenandoah Mountains of Virginia. It ended on July 26, 1863, in the East Texas Piney Woods town of Huntsville. Between these dates, the central thesis of this website is that Sam Houston’s accomplishments and impact on the history of Texas and, by extension, the United States, arguably qualifies him as one of the most important figures in American history.
This website highlights Houston’s life and career as a soldier, statesman, diplomat, politician, and Texas patriot. In particular, it will focus on the latter years of his life – 1847 to 1863 - during which his principal residence and ultimate final resting place was located in Huntsville, Texas.
Despite a life of accomplishments and contributions to public service, the latter years of Houston’s life were some of his most important – and difficult. Decisions about multiple attempts at state and national public office and about his position on Texas’ succession from the Union are examples of many decisions and actions he undertook during the latter stages of his life and career while residing in Huntsville.
